Pomona, CA (April 17, 2022) – Police say two people lost their lives in a multi-car accident on the 60 Freeway in Pomona. The incident began overnight Sunday, April 17, at Reservoir Street in the eastbound lanes of the thoroughfare. California Highway Patrol officials stated they were investigating multiple collisions in the area.

The first crash happened just before 2:00 a.m. leaving the carpool lane blocked by two cars. The second crash, which turned fatal for two people, happened after a Toyota Camry, driven by 24-year-old Ryan Sanchez, came upon the first crash and stopped. Sanchez was riding with a passenger identified as a female, age 23.

Police believe Sanchez exited his vehicle to help with the first crash. He was at the crash scene for a few minutes before getting back into his vehicle. When he re-entered his car, a second vehicle, a Honda Civic, collided with the rear of his vehicle at a high rate of speed.

Reports state that the impact is what most likely led to the death of the 23-year-old female passenger. The Civic also caught fire after the crash, sources said. Due to the force of the impact, the driver of the Civic was also killed.

Sanchez was transported to a nearby medical center with injuries deemed minor in nature.

Police continue to investigate the details of the incident.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased victims.
