Jacumba, CA (June 06, 2022) – A sailor was killed and four more sustained injuries during a single-vehicle accident on a highway in Southern California on Friday, June 3rd.
Officials with the U.S. Navy confirmed that the incident took place when one woman and four men were returning from training exercises at Camp Billy Machen in Niland.
A spokesman from the California Highway Patrol said that at about 10:00 a.m., a Chevrolet Express van was heading westbound toward San Diego on Interstate 8 when, for reasons still under investigation, it swerved off the highway, struck a boulder, and overturned.
The sailor who was seated in the middle rear seat of the van died on impact.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification.
Two of the remaining sailors were critically injured and two were in stable condition. Their names are also being withheld in accordance with Navy policy.
All five sailors were assigned to the West Coast-based Naval Special Warfare units.
This accident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
Liability for Passenger Injuries in California
When reevaluating data pertaining to California vehicle accidents, almost all studies focus on how the event impacted the drivers and completely overlook the serious repercussions endured by the vehicle’s other occupants.
Statistics anthologized by the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System highlight the fact that more than 278,000 people sustain some degree of injury in the estimated 194,000 vehicle collisions that take place statewide every year.
A glance at these numbers and some quick math reveals that most injured victims are passengers; passengers who will have to cope with the same emotional, economic, and physical damages the driver.
Unfortunately, California’s legal process for recovering damages following a passenger-involved crash is often more complicated than it is for a driver, even though a passenger is rarely liable for an accident. This is just one of the many reasons it is important to hire reputable legal counsel to help with your claim and to improve your chances of full financial recovery.
