Family court cases can be some of the most emotional legal disputes people experience. Issues involving children, custody, and parental rights often create intense stress and frustration for everyone involved.
But when anger turns into threats of violence, the situation can quickly move beyond family court and into federal criminal court.
A recent case involving threats against an Orange County judge illustrates how seriously the justice system treats threats against judges and court personnel.
A Federal Sentence Following Threats Against a Judge
According to federal prosecutors, Byrom Zuniga Sanchez, a 34-year-old former Laguna Niguel resident, was sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison after making repeated death threats against an Orange County judge who presided over his child custody case.
Prosecutors stated that the threats occurred between May and July of 2023. During that time, Sanchez allegedly sent several emails threatening to kill the judge and harm others connected to the court system, including attorneys, law enforcement officers, and court staff.
One message reportedly stated that he was more committed to murdering the judge than to being present as a father.
Federal authorities later arrested Sanchez in February 2024 when he attempted to enter the United States through San Diego.
Following a jury trial in December 2025, he was convicted of two counts of making threats using interstate or foreign communications.
In March 2026, the court sentenced him to 87 months in federal prison and ordered him to pay restitution.
Why Threatening Judges Becomes a Federal Crime
Threats directed at judges, court personnel, or other officials can trigger federal criminal charges when they involve interstate communications such as emails, online messages, or social media posts.
Federal law criminalizes threats transmitted through interstate or foreign communications because those messages often travel across state or national boundaries through electronic systems.
Even when the underlying dispute began in a state family court case, threatening communications can bring federal prosecutors into the case.
Convictions under these statutes can result in significant prison sentences.
How Custody Disputes Can Escalate
Custody disputes often involve deeply personal issues. When parents believe they have been treated unfairly, emotions can run high.
However, the legal system expects individuals to address disagreements through lawful channels such as appeals, motions, or additional court proceedings.
Threats, intimidation, or harassment directed at judges or opposing parties can create serious criminal consequences and may also damage a parent’s position in the underlying custody dispute.
In many cases, threatening conduct can also affect future custody determinations because courts must evaluate whether a parent poses a risk to others involved in the child’s life.
The Impact on Families and Children
Cases involving threats or violence can have long-lasting consequences for families. According to court filings referenced in the case, the mother of the child reported experiencing severe anxiety and panic attacks due to the repeated threats.
When conflicts escalate to this level, the legal process often becomes more complex, involving both criminal proceedings and ongoing family law issues.
For children, the instability and fear created by these situations can have lasting emotional effects.
Handling Custody Disputes the Right Way
Custody cases can be frustrating, especially when a parent believes a court decision was unfair. But the legal system provides structured ways to challenge or modify custody orders.
These options may include filing motions, seeking custody modifications, or pursuing appeals when appropriate.
Maintaining professionalism and following legal procedures is critical. Actions taken during a custody dispute can affect both the legal outcome and the long-term relationship between parents and children.
